Always spoilers past the cut. Derek and the Tunnel Snakes continue to demonstrate that the concept of the werewolf pack in this show doesn’t really function as a metaphor for teen friendship. That is actually… a whole bag of worms that I don’t even want to talk about until maybe after the season finale, but one aspect of it that this episode highlights is that the pack operates in an essentially hierarchical formation. You have an alpha; you need an alpha. Ringleaders in friendship circles are seldom explicitly acknowledged by the in-group, and only very shamefully, if ever. That also ties into several other reasons why “joining the pack” isn’t an analogue for “finding a group of friends with whom you can finally fit in even though you are usually alienated for how different you are”, but yeah, I want to hold off on that at least until this season is over.
